The three words: Sensors, Transducers, Gauges
Gauges
are transducers with signal conditioners, readouts and are calibrated to engineering units, so are immediately useful.
Typically give outputs that represent secondary physical parameters such as wall thickness, height, sound level, colour, roundness. These are usually a whole instrument in them selves that can be connected to a automation or instrumentation system as data.
Sensors
are often regarded as digital devices with On-Off outputs. Examples are Inductive and capacitive devices to detect presence rather than read values.
Typically detect the presence of something and the most common types are Ultrasonic, light or inductive using magnetism.
Transducers
are able to measure through a range and be calibrated to give Engineering unit of measure but need signal conditioners and readouts.
Typical convert a primary physical parameter (temperature, pressure, force) to an electrical signal. This may require a signal conditioner connected to the transducer to amplify and make useful signal such as with RTD, strain gauges, thermocouples etc.
A good example of Gauges is the Karl Deutsch products or Centec’s products.

Put a good quality differential bi-directional Manometer across the LFE and you get a Flow output that is almost puely linear across the LFEs range. A two point polynomial straightens the output right out. Errors of 3% without and 1% with correction.
